The urgent necessity for every pig farmer to be self-supporting in his OAvn pig feed crops Avas emphasised in a statement by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Roberts. The Minister said the disastrous drought in Australia had made d imperative for New Zealand to be os self-supporting as possible. During last nine months 200,000 sacks of barley and barley meal had been imported from Australia, but no supplies would be available next year. Available supplies of Now Zealand grown barley and maize were insufficient to meet the requirements of poultry keepers, Avho were dependent on those crops, as well as on wheat, oats, pollard and bran.

Mr Roberts added that the £5 an acre subsidy was still open to pig farmers. Additional acreages of the following crops could still be sown this season: Carrots, swedes, chou mollier, and silver beet. “The position is serious and all pig producers should make an effoit to bo self-supporting on their own pig farms.” concluded Mr Roberts.
