CAPTAIN HERBERT ELECTED The bye-election which took place last Wednesday for the purpose of filling- a vacancy on the Queenstown Borough Council evinced considerable interest in the town . Though no matters of burning .interest made themselves apparent in the election and the candidates adopted no particular platform except the furtherance of the common interests of the town the electors gave a preponderating vote to Capt. Herbert. The councillorelect lias a good knowledge of the requirements of the town and his immediate connexion with the tourist business will prove beneficial at the council table. The votes polled by the respective candidates was as follows:—Capt. G. A. Herbert 181 J. C. Philp 67. G. D. Cochrane 22, informal 6. or 279 votes.. The returning officer. Mr C. M. Robertson 121, E. J. lowen 27. The number of votes recorded was 278. In May 1939. when the present Mayor resigned his seat to take the office of chief citizen a vacancy occurred and in a straight nut contest Mr Jas. Thomson defeated Capt. Herbert by 198 votes to 85. On that occasion candidature was strongly supported by Labor. The number of votes recorded was 283. In October. 1939. Cr. Abum resigned when a poll was held and Mr Gaunt’ett-Curtis was elected. The polling was as follows: GauntlettCurtis 128. Roden que IQI, informal 4. The number of votes recorded was 233.
