Otago Patriotic Council

MEETING OF QUEENSTOWN CONTROLLING COMMITTEE. A meeting of the local Controlling Committee of the Otago Patriotic Council was held in the Garrison Hall on Thursday last. His Worship the Mayor (Dr Anderson) presided over a good attendance of members. • His Worship read a letter which had been received by the Borough Council from the chairman of the Otago Patriotic Committee advising that in view of providing comforts and amenities for soldiers in camp and on troop ships and supplying the mens’ wants abroad, it had been decided to hold a Flag Day during the week February sth to 10th. Each Borough or district tl trough out the province could choose on which day to hold its Flag Day. The Council was asked to co-operate with the Returned Soldiers! Association for the purpose of raising the maximum amount on Flag Day. All monies would be paid to the secretary of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council Dunedin, and will bo used for the purposes of our boys irrespective of the district to which they belong. . After some further explanation by the Mayor, Capt. Herbert moved and Mr E. Sharpe seconded a motion that Saturday. 10th February, be appointed as Flag Day in Aieenstown, and that the Red Cross Committee and local branch of R.S.A- be asked to co-oper-ate in the collection. The following collectors were appointed for the day: —Morning: Mesdames E. Sharpe, Martin-Smith and Herbert; afternoon: Mesdames C. Inglis, H. London and Miss B. Farrant; evening: Mesdames Murchison and J. Cockburn, Misses Inder and Dawson. Any others who are desirous of assisting should get in touch with the secretary, Mr H. London. A‘ suggestion was niade_ regarding stalls on the streets, but it was decided to confine the effort to tflie Flat: appeal. The secretary was instructed to procure 1500 flags for in Queenstown and district. including Glenorchy. Mr E. Sharpe kindly offered to take charge of the Glenorchy collection.

A discussion took place as to the extent of territorial the local Controlling Committee should cover. The Chairman said that all local bodies throughout Otago district had been requested to set up similar controlling committees. He did not know. however,, what action had been taken by the Lake County Council.

The opinion of the majority of those present was that Arthurs Point and Lower Shotover should come under the control of the Queenstown Committee and it was decided to approach the Lake County Council on these lines.

SEXD-OFF TO SEAM AX X. LLOYD. Provided no move had been made at Arthurs Point to give a farewell to Seaman Xorman Lloyd, of the Lean dor, the secretary and chairman were asked to take the necessary steps.
