NAVY MAN FAREWELLED

A very pleasant social function was held in the schoolroom ut ArthursPoint on Friday Last when about 70 or 80 residents of -Queenstown and Arthurs Point met to say bon voyage to Norman Lloyd, who left on Saturday morning on route to Lyttileton where- he iis> to rejoin. Ms _ shipH.M..S, Le-an-de-r. Norman, who is thesecond eldest son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd' of Arthur® Point has been in the N.Z. DiivM-o'n of the Royal Navy for the/ past fifteen months and had been home- on short leave- following some monthisi’ service in Inis phlpf, and the local Patriotic Committee, lactivatedi by it® energetic secretary, Mr H. London, had with the pe-nnisidoin of His Worship the Mayor of Queenstown- arranged, at short notice, the fare-well Owing to the short notice precluding the arrangement of any formal programme the -evening took the form- of a dance. No charge wasi made for admission, but a collection to defray expenses was taken, at the door. By 'ist in Queenstown and; Arthur® Point those who had known the-Whyd family! during the time they have been, resident in the district (about 20 years) gave generously with the happy result that a small presentation was made to the guest of the evening. Division of the navy -exempli--fying in particular the action in which the Achilliesi and Exeter disposed of the. German pocket battleship Graf Spec. Captain G. A- Herbert who saw! considerable .service- at sea during the Great War of 1914-1918 spoke intimately of the- work of vari-ousi branches 'of the naval services particularly the submarine and destroyer divisions. He expressed his high appreciation and admiration for the work' of the silent navy and declared himself sure that from his knowledge of the one and-only district representative in the personnel of the Navy, the traditions) -of the (service and tjho honour of New Zealand would as- far as Lay in one lad’s power be worthily upheld. Mr Hugh Eo-ss .spoke on somewhat similar lines and thanked the residents and friends who bad made, the- gathering possible for their support. In making the presentation of a wristlet watch His Worship expressed the hope that the recipient would long live to use the gift and would think of the many friends ho left behind every time lie looked at it while, away and bring it back with him when he returned on the- , completion of his- service. After suitable reply of thank® and appreciation by N Lloyd all present joined in singing' “He’,si a Jolly Good ■Fellow’’ 1 and in wishing him ‘Bon Voyage' and a. safe and speedy return.
