Queenstown Borough.

A special meeting of the Council was held on the 23rd December in order to clear up the business in hand and authorise the payment of accounts. His Worship the Mayor presided, and there were present Councillors W. A. Anderson, S. S. Aburn, A. Scheib and J. P- * lx -

R. J. McConville, Winton, wrote drawing attention of Council to inefficient woi Icing of his soak pit connected with property on Suburb street. The writer asked that satisfactory arrangements be made m the direction of proper sanitation.— Writer to be informed that the matter had been taken up with Mr Wells, Saniof Transport, Wellington, wrote enclosing posters tor use in the town in the interests of the Road Safety Campaign. The poster was awarded the first prize in a competition recently.—Posters to be displayed in the to The Electric Power Board and Supply Authorities Association of New Zealand, circularised the Council regarding its support towards an Electrical Court at the New Zealand Centenary Exhibition, 1940. The Council apportionment over three years was £3 per year. —It was resolved to contribute this amount. The Chief Post Office, Dunedin, wrote stating that the Central Council of King George V Memorial Fund had practically decided to build a health camp on a site offered in Central Otago.—Received, The Resident Engineer, Public Works Department, Alexandra, wrote directing that proper attention be given to the proper conditioning and maintenance of main highways during the holiday season so as to safeguard road users.—Received. The District Highways Council, Dunedin, advised that the Main Highways Board had decided that in approved cases a highway subsidy of £1 for £1 will be granted for the construction and maintenance of footpaths on State and ordinary main highways.—Received. R. G. Speirs Ltd., Invercargill, submitted a price for iron plates for street signs.—Referred to Works Committee with power to act. The Department of Internal Affairs advised the Council regarding certain legislation passed during the first part of the present session. Under the Dogs Registration Amendment Act an organised attempt on a national basis was to be made to reduce the prevalence of hydatid disease in the Dominion.—Received.

A complaint was received from a householder regarding the improper emptying of a night-soil can.—Copy of letter to be sent to the night-soil carter. The Tourist Department wrote asking for the name of passenger on the Monterey who complained that his itinerary in New Zealand did not include Queenstown. Enquiries would then be made from the officer where the visitor booked his tour. — Name to be supplied. The Hume Pipe Co., wrote advising that it could not act in the capacity of consulting engineer and contractor in connection with a drainage scheme in connection with the town. The Council was advised to appoint a consultant engineer to prepare the proposals and supervise the scheme on the Council’s behalf.—lt was resolved to write to Mr Boyd, Consulting Engineer, asking him for his fee to complete the work, and it was also decided to write advising the Hume Pipe Co. The Hon. F. Jones, PostermastcrGeneral, wrote stating that he would let the Council know later if he could be present at the official opening of the new Post Office.—Clerk to thank Mr Jones.

The Southland Progress League wrote stating that the suggestion to hold a conference of representatives of South Island Progress Leagues had been abandoned. The invitation of the Lake County Coun-

cil to hold an executive meeting in Queenstown wcis accepted, and this was fixed for the evening of 26th February. J Edgar wrote stating that he had no intention of selling his property on the lake front at a lower price. He would still consider exchanging it for the section held by the Council. The writer drew the Council’s attention to (1) two dead rats which were on the lawn at the water-front; (2) dogs running loose with no owner and (3) unburied night-soil next the cemetery.—The letter was received. A letter was received from the Invercargill Clerks and Office Assistants Association advising that the Council now came under the Otago Local Bodies award.— The clerk to write to the Employers’ Association asking for further information. Hydro-Electric Report. Councillor Anderson, chairman of the Lighting Committee, reported that since last meeting the matter of the care of the Deisel engine had been considered. It was recommended that for the first twelve months Mr H. Tomkies be placed in charge of the plant and report each month the number of hours it had been necessary to run it and the reason for each running; also that he be paid at the rate of 5/- per hour for running and overhauling the engine. The hydro-electric dam had been down most of the time since last meeting and it was only by constant vigilance and restriction of running hours that there was enough water to give an evening load. Most people had borne the inconvenience in a reasonable spirit. It was hoped to have the Deisel running next day. It was recommended that the Council subscribe to the New Zealand Centenary Exhibition, 1940, in accordance with the desire of the Power Board and Supply Authorities Court.

The report was adopted and it was agreed as stated to subscribe to the Electrical Court at the Exhibition.

Mr C. M. Inglis, Town Clerk, was appointed dog tax collector for the next twelve months. A proposition to employ a collector on commission was lost.

It was decided to give public notice that owing to the shortage of water the irrigation of garden be discontinued. Accounts amounting to £954 8/2 were passed for payment. This included several accounts amounting to £247 3/9 due for work done in connection with the removal and re-erection of the Deisel plant, which should have been paid by Skippers Ltd., the vendors of the plant. His Worship the Mayor said that as this was the last meeting of the year he would take the opportunity of wishing the Councillors, the staff and the Press the compliments of the season. The past year had been fruitful of good work and he considered the prospects for the coming year were good. Due acknowledgment was made of the compliments and the good wishes were reciprocated.
