HEAD OF LAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). ‘ > Glenorchy, Sept. 1, Weather. Beautiful spring weather has been experienced during the past month, a pleasant contrast to the weather of August last year when there were scarcely three successive fine days. Sharp frosts still continue at night which retard growth to some extent, but the days have been mild and sunny so that, locally, farmers have no grouch against the weather. Lambs are now making their appearance on several farms, and as there sedms to he still an abundance of turnips and hay throughout the district, stock should fare well until grass comes away. W.D.F.U. Mrs K. Scott presided at the August meeting of the W.D..F.U. held on 20th ult. Proceedings opened with the reading of the Creed, after which the usual business .was transacted. Donations were contributed to _ the Leper Fund and the Plunket Society. It was decided that in order to raise money for the local Medical Fund a public subscription should be taken, the Southland Hospital Board having agreed to subsidise this fund up to a certain limit. Miss Eileen Bryant was the nominee selected to represent Glenorchy Branch at Country Girls Week, which commences in Dunedin on September 6th A very interesting programme has been arranged which should be both entertaining and instructive to the girls whose privilege it Is to attend. During the .social "half-hour vocal items _ were contributed by -Mrs J. A. Reid and Mrs D. Scott. Miss Symonds, a visitor from Alexandra, gave a brief talk on the work of the Galloway Branch. Presentation of Prizes and Concert. On Thursday, 19th ult., the pupils of Rees Valley School held their break-up and presentation of prizes, which had been postponed from December. A varied programme of action songs, recitations and solos was given' by the pupils to an lap-

preciative audience of parents and friends. The stage was prettily decorated with evergreens and gaily coloured streamers, giving a .very pleasing effect. Mrs K. Scott presented the prizes, and thanked Miss McLeod and the children for their delightful entertainment. While afternoon tea was being served an inl struraental trio was given by Mrs A. Scott (piano), Mrs D. Scott (violin) and Mis® E. Bryant (guitar). The following is the programme: New Zealand Anthem, “God De'ecd New Zealand’; “Who’s That a-oaUing”; recitation, Norman Koch; solo, “The Minstrel Boy,” Alex. McMeeking; unison songs, "Hark Through the ' Village Street,” “Keel Row,’'’ “Frog Puddles”; recitation, Dorothy McMeeking; duet, ‘“There’s an ’ole in me Bucket,” Eva Scott and Reg. Hume; solo, “Brown Bird Singing,” Joyce MoMeeking; recitation, Eva Scott; part songs, “One Man Went to Mow,” “Sunset Tree’’; action songs, “Round and Round the Village,” “Once there was a Princess”; Maori songs, “E Pari Ra,” “Pokare Kare Ana.” Accident. Mr R. Moody, a young man in the employ of Mr T. E- Bryant, Kinloch, had the misfortune to meet with a serious accident last Saturday. He was engaged in cutting firewood in the bush, when a piece of wood flew back, hitting him in the face and inflicting several injuries to Ms eye. Mr Moody was conveyed to Queenstown by launch where his injuries were attended to by Dr. Anderson, and he is. now a patient in Frankton Hospital. The Sciicclite Industry. The price of scheelite continues to soar, much to the satisfaction of all concerned in the industry. A new company has recently been formed under the direction of Mr Geo. Reid, and among individual claim-owners there is much activity. Snow is l fast disappearing and work on the highest claim® will .soon be possible. There is every prospect of the forthcoming season being a very profitable one for those interested in the scheelite industry. Personal. Messrs D. Heffernan and G. Carr nave gone to Christchurch for the Test match. Mr J. Forbes and Misis Edna Forbes also left last Monday for Christchurch. Mr A. Barr, who recently visited Dunedin, returned by ’plane on Friday. Mrs Symonds, Mr Geo. and Miss M. Symonds, Alexandra, have been the guests of Mrs K. Scott. Mrs R. Hume, who has been ill in Dunedin for several weeks, is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mrs A. Buchanan and her young son, of Makarewa, are spending a holiday at Kinloch. Mrs W. R. Hume, Wyuna, has been visiting friends in Invercargill. Mr T. E. Bryant is at present ,in Central Otago. Misses I. McLeod and E- Symonds are spending the school holidays at their respective home®. Mrs W. McLaren and her two sons are visiting Invercargill. Mr C. Koch is spending a few days in Queenstown. Mrs J. Thornton paid a short visit to Queenstown last week. Mr and Mrs T. Gray and family, Gore, recently spent a holiday with Mr and Mrs A. Reid, Arcadia. Miss Jean Sharpe is holidaying in the south.
