TOWN HALL TALKIES

“THE KING STEPS OUT.** TO-AIOEEOW. i Hollywood, in its efforts to maintain the high plane of musical pictures that it has set for itself, leaves no stone unturned. Tire finest available talent is forever being pursued by the studios. Broadway has practically been stripped bare of its song writers, musicians, and musical stars. But what seems to be the greatest coup to date was made by Columbia Pictures. The music for its newest Grace Aloore production, “The King Steps Out.” showing at the Town Hall on AYed., Ist September, was written by no less a celebrity than Fritz Kreisler. The world-famous violinist has gained immense fame with his violin compositions-, Including “Caprice Viennois” and ‘“Liebesfreud.” Besides having written two musical stage productions, Kreisler has recently admitted being the composer of several noted compositions that have borne other names. Among the Kreisler .compositions that Aliss Aloore sings in “The King Steps Out” are “Stars in Aly Eyes/’ “Learn How to Lose,” and "The End Begins.” Dorothy Fields wrote the lyrics. " Supporting Aliss Aloore in the film are Franohot Tone, Walter Connolly, Raymond AA r alburn, Victor Jory, Elisabeth Eidson, and others. Josef von Sternberg directed. Sidney Buchman wrote the screen play. “KID MILLIONS.” SHOAVTNG NEXT SATURDAY. r If there’s such a thing as S perfect screen musical, “Kid Millions,” Eddie Cantor’s new annual extravaganza for Samuel Goldwyn is it. The banjo-eyed comedian is funnier than ever as a boy Cinderella of the Brooklyn waterfront who turns out to be the sole heir of Professor AA'ilson, late Egyptologist who left a fortune in buried treasure in Egypt. The presence of several other claimants to the fortune makes rne story fast, funny and furious. Chief of these is Ethel Merman, as A hard-boiled song plugger posing as the late Professor'a common-law wife, and her boneheaded gangster boyfriend, played by Warren Hymer. Ann Sothern and George Murphy furnish the heart interest. The fun begins before the boatload of treasure hunters even embarks and runs high during the crossing when Ethel and Hymer try unsuccessfully to put Eddie out of the way. Arrived in Egypt, Eddie gets mixed up with, the Shiek, played by Paul Harvey, and his gcorgeous harem ’of Goldwyn Girls. Shiek's not-quite-bright daughter, Fanya, played by Eve Sully, develops a terrific crush on Eddie and saves him from the boiling oil vats on his promise to wed her. But Eddie wants to get back to his Brooklyn sweetheart and Tanya's jealous fiance, played by Jesse Block, helps him get away with the fortune in a plane. Following a crazy flight over the Atlantic, Eddie lands in New York and opens a free ice cream factory for boys and girls. The finale, showing the ice cream being frozen and served, is the loveliest and most effective techiiColour sequence the screen has offered to date. Lavishly produced for release through United Artists, “Kid Alillions” offers several gcorgeous girl and song numbers. ■ “Kid Alillions’” is a million dollars worth of entertainment. See it and treat yourself to the greatest ('film 'tf fun feast in years.
