HEAD OF LAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Glenorchy, July 21. W.D.F.U. The July meeting - of the Glenorchy branch of the W.D.F.U. was held at Larnslaw Hotel on 9th lust. In the absence of the President, Mrs K. Scott, Mrs J. E. Held, presided over a fair attendance of members. After the reading of the Creed considerable correspondence was dealt with. Miss Kirkpatrick donated a dressed doll for a guessing competition for W.D.F.U. funds. Mrs J. McFarlane gave details of a dressmaking course which might interest members and kindly offered to give any instructions necessary.

There were no- nominations from this branch for Country Girls’ Week to be held in .September, the matter being left open in the meantime. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs S. Knowles, after which the meeting adjourned. Weather.

During the past six weeks extremely hard frosts have been experienced at Head of Lake, frozen pipes and shortage of water causing consider-.? able inconvenience to housewives. Skating enthusiasts, however, have enjoyed this exhilarating sport either on the lagoon or on Diamond Lake which were both in excellent order for skating. Although there is a considerable quantity of snow on tho mountain's, the winter, on the whole, has been a fine open one, and very! favourable for stock. Social Round.

Glenorchy has been quiet, socially this winter. The lack of a Local football team and the consequent absence of visiting teams has made the -social round seem dull in comparison with that of the two previous winters. Basketball is still being played but of course- does not evoke the same interest as football. A basketball dance, which was fairly well patronised, was held on Saturday evening, 17th inst. in the Glenorchy hall. Mystery parcels were won in a guessing competition by Miss 0. Lees and Mr R. Lower. Dance music was -supplied by Mesclames A. Scoff--, D. Scott and S. Knowles. Mr R. Lower made an efficient M.O. The Schoclite Industry. it is anticipated that there will be considerable activity in the local scheelito industry during the forthcoming season. At present many of the claims on high altitudes are covered with snow and work on these is impossible until the snow is gone. Several of the claims could not profitably be worked when ore was at a low value and were consequently abandoned, but at the present high price el' scheelite, these are being taken up again, and when developed, will possibly show lucrative returns.
