Mr Barker came to Queenstown 6| years ago from the Taupe office, and it can be said without fear of contradiction that no postmaster has ever filled the position more capably, conscientiously, and with such acceptance to the people of the district* as he has done. In every respect he has upheld the best traditions of the c<ost and telegraph service of the Dominion as the confidant cf the general public. Moreover, he has acted sirnoly and unobtrusively as ' the guide" counsellor and friend of many with whom, in their transactions with, the department, he has been brought into intimate contact. Since the Unemployment Act came into operation, or,*rather when the local committees were set up to assist in the operation of the Act—Mr Barker was appointed Queenstown. In this capacity he has Queenstown! In this capacity he has also displayed much ability, and has handled many delicate and difficult situations with tact and good Judgment. The universal regret that will be felt at Mr Barker’s departure wEI, however, be tempered by the knowledge that his new appointment carries with it distinct and well-merited promotion. As is genarally ‘known, Mr Barker has also been observer at, the local meterological station since its establishment.
