HIGHWAYS FINANCE
INDEPENDENTS SECURE REPRESENTATION WELLINGTON, July 2b. Some amusing by-play marked tire successful attempt made by Mr W ilkinson in the House to-night to secure representation for the Independent group on the Select Committee winch will inquire into questions of highways finance. When the committee was being set up Mr Wilkinson suggested that the name of a member of the Independent group should be included. Mr Eraser; “ It is a party, then? ” Mr Wilkinson: “It is not the same sort of party as the hon. gentleman's. Every member here makes up his own mind. He does not vote ..ccording to the dictates of his leader. 1 think the independents are entitled to the consideration of the Government. We on this side of the House have always been interested in this question. Another Independent. Mr Black, moved that the name of Mr Rushworth be included.
Mr Samuel: Have you got his consent?
Mr Forbes said he had no objection j to Mr Rushworth’s name being in- ] eluded. The trouble in the past hadl been to divide the work of members", of committees in such a way as to j
ensure that those appointed had the time to devote to work. Of course, the Prime Minister added, it might he difficult to satisfy all the heads of the Independent group. Mould Mr Rushworth bo acceptable? Mr Fraser: He is the leader. Mr Samuel: Why not put them all
on. Mr Forbes: I’m afraid I couldn’t swell the committee to that extent. The name of Mr Rushworth was added.
