ARROW BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Arrow Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening last. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Milne), Crs. Anderson, James, Saunders. Shaw, Summers, and Tobin. Before proceeding with tire business the Mayor referred to the death of Miss Frances Jenkins, daughter of Cr. Jenkins, and asked members to stand in silence for a few seconds as a mark of sympathy. George Socles wrote asking for permission to fence off a section at the rear of the Council Chambers to use a-s a garden. Writer said that if the Council required the section at any time he would give it up.—On the motion of Cr James, seconded by Cr Shaw, permission was granted for the use of the section during the pleasure of the Council.

A communication was received from J. S'. Sinclair, solicitor, Dunedin, acting' for Mr W. McKibbin, in reference to the Council acting as trustees of debenture for £IOO, the income-from which was to be devoted to the upkeep of four graves in the Arrowtown cemetery. Writer stated that Mr McKibbin was very anxious, if it could be arranged, that the Council should incur no financial responsibilities in the matter, and if that was the only difficulty, writer considered it could easily be surmounted by the Council having a free hand to spend the income, from time to time available, in the upkeep of the graves, tombstones, etc. —It was decided to adhere to the resolution passed at the previous meeting, viz., not to accept the trust.

N. G. Critcbfield, secretary Wakatipu Football Sub-union, wrote -asking thp Council to erect a wire fence on the pavilion side of the Recreation Ground. It was stated that during a match the referee and linesmen had great difficulty in keeping the playing area clear of spectators, and there was danger of an accident occurring. —lt was decided to grant the Subunion permission to erect the fence, the Council to supply the necessary posts- from the timber at present being cut, the Sub-union to supply wire, etc., and the w r ork to be done by unemployed labour. The secretary to the Eden Chamber of Commerce, wrote asking support of a resolution recently -passed by the Chamber urging the Government to bring down legislation to reduce by per cent, all interest on Government bonds, local body debentures and private mortgages—lt was decided to support the resolution. T. Pryde, secretary Southland Hospital Board, wrote in reply to a letter asking if the Council had the right

to sell for removal the hospital buildings and fever ward. Writer stated that as the property was transferred by the Board to the Council in 1919, the Board could not now raise any objection to the Council selling the buildings. It was, however, pointed out that the transfer of the property was made on condition that it would not be sold or used for hospital purposes, but be held by the Arrow Borough Council for the of the district and used in such manner as the Council thought fit. Under these circumstances, writer .suggested that it would be only in keeping with the conditions of the transfer that the amount realised by the disposal of the buildings be expended on the property. It was considered that as the buildings were deteriorating, it was advisable, to dispose of them if possible. As the hospital buildings and fever ward were included in Dr, Ferguson’s lease, it was decided to give Dr. Ferguson three months’ notice of the termination of the lease in respect ol these buildings. The following were appointed chairmen of committees: Hall, the Mayor; Works, Or. Jenkins; Finance, Cr. James. The Clerk said that the estimate of the cost of the new hall had nod yet come to hand, and it was decided that a special meeting be held when this was received. The striking .of a general rate of 2s in the C and a sanitation charge of lls .per annum .was confirmed. The Clerk was instructed to write the Public Works engineer asking that the course of irrigation race near Mr 11. Wilcox’s residence be altered. Accounts amounting to £63 10s 8i were passed for payment, Leaving a credit balance of £4BO 11s 3d (including balance of insurance money on Athcneum Hall.
