Hoven or "Blown."

PROMPT REMEDIES. When cattle became hoven or blown on wet clover or lucerne-, prompt measures must- usually be- taken. A brisk dose of table salt and ground ginger, say a tablespoonful of each shaken up in a pint of hot water, sweetened with a good spoonful of Made treacle, may be given. In an emergency where swift action is demanded, give half a wine glass oi turpentine in half a-pint of water, shake the bottle, well to mix the turps and water. This will generally cause the gases to be belched up, and the distention of the- stomach to collapse. If no -turps is handy, use ordinary lamp paraffin, or petrol, say a glass or a glass and a half, according to the severity of the hoven. Mix with two or three glasses of water, put into a bottle, and shake the bottle vigorously to produce an emulsion. Paraffin will not mix with water unless shaken thoroughly. Be careful in administering the dose. Don’t empty the bottle too fast so as to choke the animal. Insert the neck of the bottfte at the side of the cow’s mouth, and hold the head just as high as to make iker swallow the full dose, sip by sip. Rub the paunch and flanks -of the animal with a wisp of straw. Don’t on any account let a hoven animal lie down until the flatulence subsides. In an hour after the paunch has resumed its normal condition, half a bottle of linseed oil may be given. A few powders, containing bicarbonate of soda, ginger, gentian, and ammonia, may be given in treacle water, once or twice a day, if there is any suspicion of digestive trouble . having been a contributory cause of the hoven. Suitable tonic, or cudding powders may be obtained of any chemist and druggist who sells veti-nary medicines. A good homely tonic consisting of J-oz each of ground ginger and bicarbonate of soda, may be given in half a pint of fine oatmeal gruel, to which add half a, pint of water, and a -good spoonful or two of treacle.— - Ch'istchurch Press.
