LIMESTONE QUARRY.
THE CROWN TERRACE PROJECT. MINISTER CONSIDERS IT IMPRACTICABLE. Mr W. Bodkin, M.P., has received the following communication from the Hon. A. J. Murdoch, Minister of Agriculture, which explains itself:— “With reference to the representations made by you on behalf of settlers on the Crown Terrace in the Arrowtown district who submitted a proposal for the opening up of a lime kiln, 1 now have to inform you that an officer of the Department recently went to the district -a£l visited the limestone deposit in company with Messrs Cockbui n, Thompson and Miller. After going into the matter thoroughly with these gentlemen he pointed out to them that access to the proposed quarry would involve considerable expenditure and the quarrying and burning of the stone would mean additional expense, whereas the settlers are already in a position to secure excellent carbonate of lime at the edge of Lake Hayes. This deposit its only a few hundred yards from the Queen-,stown-Arro wtown main road, and its mechanical condition is such that it does not require grinding. Being in a pulverent form it can be shovelled like sand, and is ideally suited for topdressing. This lime is obtainable for the carting at present. After a discussion of the matter with the proposers of the movement they agreed that the proposal, even if carried out, would be of no mateiial advantage, and they are now convinced that the development of the limestone quarry in question is impracticable.
