MISCELLANEOUS SPORTING.

[By G leaner.J RACING. Avondale and Ashburton meetings were the attractions over the week end. Prodice, which was one of the bestmares in commission last season, commenced this season well by winning Avondale Cup, with the good weight of 9st 21bs. Standfast, one of the best of the lightweights, was second and top weight, Historic 3rd. With the going soft Star Stranger would be a non starter.

Chrysology was expected to race well "in the Maiden Plate but would want the race. Gay Cavalier carried too many guns for a promising sort in Rosshire.

The crack two-year old, Supremacy, which has been spelled for a season si*owed a return to form (by running) second to Awarere.

Starshooter was too good for Itasca I over 10 furlongs at "Ashburton. The lormer should win over a longer distance before the season is far through. The winner of the 2yr old classic at Avondale, King Colossus, is likely to be heard of again soon. A good one to follow. The early favourite for the Champion Hack Plate, Volimond, wasn t in the hunt. Gustavo, brother to Count Cavour, is shaping well in Ills preparation for classic honours arid with a win at Ashburton must have a good show in the Dunedin Guineas. Aratheusa, the crack 2yr-old pacer 01 ’ last season, won the Rakaia Trot well from Wrackler. The former has the makings of a champion. Historic will win a Dig handicap soon.

Pliar Lap. the wonder horse, won again from Night March on Saturday. His price for the Melbourne Cup is now so short that one can hardlv see it. If he is pulled out or loses "the big race the books will have a royal win. Catoma is one of the Catmint breed which like soft going. Most of the Martians like to hear their hoofs rattle and soft going is no good to Star Stranger. Haze was schooling very well at Riccarton last week and good judges could’nt see him miss at Ashburton. The field wasn’t very strong, hut he won well.

The foal produced by Entreaty last week is a full brother to Phar Lap. Should he reach the sale ring he should command a high figure. The Dunedin Club has received good entries except in the principal race on first day. The South Island stables do not contain many good staying handicap horses these days and the eleven nominated for the Mosciel Handicap are not a very classy lot. Gesture, the crack two year old in N.Z. last year is far from well. Early fancies for the N.Z. Trotting Cup are all going well. Logan Park, Travis Axworthy, Linkman, Terence Dillon are all being supported by keen anti-post bettors. FOOTBALL. Local games declared off on account of bad. weather. Southland papers still credit Sharpe and Niven with being good 5-Bs, while they are really very ordinary club inside backs. They play too orthodox a game to be good men in a provincial side. Manawhenua had a narrow win over Hawkes Bay. 4 to 3 was a close call. Wellington put it well across Wairarapa—42 to 19 is a big win. Otago managed to secure a win against Canterbury. The 1930 season has not produced many new stars and certainly no really brilliant ones. Hart is probably the find of the season. McLean, Cor- 1 ner, Oliver are three others who gained International caps, but probably Purdue, Bali, Ruru, Fuller, Barry, Jessup and Page would have shone in the Tests had they been given places. JJy their play in interpro. games this year they were well ahead of some ol the old hands who were selected. Hazlett and Bell "ire retiring from the game. Southland will miss them, especially the irrepressible Wampy. GENERAL. The semi-finals of locai golf championship were set led last week. Cooke beat McNeill, 4 and 2, and Griffin heat Wilkinson, 1 up on the 19th after a ding'dong go. _ , Cooke now meets Griffin in the final. A team from the local club will probably travel to Alexandra in search of tlie Dewar Cup. A local ladies’ team travelled to Cromwell last week and were defeated by 4 matches to 2. The Cromwell ladies are noted for their hospitality, and although defeated the local 1 players had a most enjoyable outing.
