A start has been made with the work of effecting repairs to the old town wharf in order that it may be opened to the public as a promenade. The local Progressive League has made itself responsible for the undertaking, and that body is to be heartily commended for its foresight, Messrs Beer, Mclnnes and Jos, Thomson have very generously placed'their spare time at the .disposal of the League, and each evening when, they are off duty they are to be seen plying hammer and saw on the wharf in a united effort to push on the good work to early completion.

A dance organised by the Cricket Club in aid of funds for the purchase of held material took place in the Garrison Hall on Friday night and it was a very jolly affair. A meeting of members of the Lake County A. and P. Society was held in Arrow town on Saturday last. The principal business was to consider the purchase of the show grounds and the revision of the programme, for the show in March. The show grounds were offered by Mr Bloxham at £6 per acre for 7 acres. Mr T. Houston ■generously offered to lend the Society the sum of £2O for three, years free of interest provided the balance, was forthcoming. Mr Houston was thanked for his generous offer and it was decided, after discussion, to circularise the, members of the Society with a view to raising the balance, of the money. It is hoped, moreover, to increase the amount to £SO so that the ■Society may be l enabled to plant trees around, the ground. The, object is- a commendable one and should receive the whole-hearted support of those interested.
