£62,000 FOR MERCHANT SEAMEN

The Duke of Connaught, as chairman of King George’s fund for sailors, has received £60,000 .under a deed of trust and £2,000 as a special gift to the fund. This sum has been transferred to the fund by the trustees of the estate of the late Mr Henry Herbert Wills (tobacco magnate), and forms a proportion of the ten shares of his estate which Mr Wills bequeathed for the benefit of seamen of the mercantile marine. The capital sum of £60,000 will be transferred to the official trustees of charitable funds (the trustees of King George’s fund for sailors) as a special trust to be called the “Henry Herbert Wills Trust,” and the income will be distributed by the General Council of the fund, in collaboration with Mrs AVills, among marine charities working on behalf of seamen of the merchant service. The remaining £2,000 is an absolute gift to the fund without any conditions, save that it be employed for the purposes of the mercantile marine only as the council shall think fit. The income will be divided by the fund among mercantile marine institutions and funds, not among individuals, and it will necessarily be some months before there is any accumulation of interest on the capital and before any distribution can take place.
