This nmv sound a comparatively little thing, but in reality it is a very big undertaking indeed. The making of new maps k one of the most costly and arduous undertakings it is possible to conceive. Apart altogether from the preliminary work ot surveying and measuring the urea to be mapped, a man actually engaged in drawing a large scale map has done all thta is expected of him if bo produces merelT one square inch of work in .1 (fay. * On this basif. it cost the London County Council £20,000 plus fifteen years continuous labour to finish its re-••fMitly-completed municipal map of Greater London. But even thi\ is a mere flea-bite compared with that involved in the production of the great "one-millionth scale'' map of the world, in which all the nations were co-operating until the war stopped the work. This, tlie biggest job of the kind ever undertaken, was expected to occupy not les« than thirty years, and the estimated cost was £6.000,000
