MINING JOTTINGS.

The Department of Agriculture, Commerce, and Tourists, is in receipt of advice from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London, that on the Ist December the prices for wolfram, scheelite and antimony ore were as follows :—Wolfroni 33s per unit, scheelite 31s per unit, antimony ore, £7 10s per ton on the basis of 50 per cent. s.b. THE MACBAES GOLDFIELD. AN IMPOBTANT DISCOVERY. A few weeks ago we reported the discovery of a quartz lode containing gold and scheelite near the Macraes township. Since then the lucky prospectors have been opening oat the lode, and have had a trial crashing at Donaldson's Bros, battery of eighteen tons, which has given a return of jE3 per ton in value. The gold contents are stated to be worth about £2 per ton, and the scheelite £1 per ton. The reef is from 4ft to sft wide where the trial crushing was taken from, and has been traced for upwards of half a mile. This is the most important find that has been made on our goldfields for many years, and the development of this property will be watched with considerable interest. We understand that a further trial crushing is to be made from the lode at about quarter of a mile distant from where the last crushing was taken. The lode here is a good width, and prospects taken shows the lode to be richer in gold than where first discovered. The discovery of a rich reef like this, which can be traced for half a mile on the surface, reads something like a West Australian discovery. The property is now owned by a syndicate, several well-known Dunedin mining men being interested.—'Star.'
