While the congregation at the Church of Christ, Warrnambool, Victoria, was waiting for the preacher on Sunday morning, December 17, he was lying dead within a yards of the church. Mr James Thomson, a resident of Warrnambool, had been announced to conduct service at the church. He arrived before the commencement of the service, but did not enter the building. The congregation waited for a while, but as he did not come into the church a search was made., and he was found lying dead close to the church. Quite a sportsmanlike attitude was exhibited by a number of competitors in the hop, step and jump event at the Mangatu sports (says the 'Gisborne Times'). A ycung fellow named Eoy Patterson broke a small bone in one of his feet, which absolutely precluded him from farther contesting in the event. The other competitors immediately withdrew, and allowed Patterson to win the event. The public also subscribed the sum of £4, which will go towards defraying his expenses at the hospital. A sparrow mistook a matinee hat for a place of refuge on the Biversdale station platform recently. The bird came beneath the verandah, and becoming bewildered flew and nestled beneath the feathers, much to the amusement of those present and the consternation of the fair wearer. The wanderer remained assured of i its perfect immunity until removed.
