Apparently the restrictions under the ! recent amendments to the Licensing Act are more severe than was at first supposed. In the past it has been the habit of persons with whisky or other alcoholic beverages in their possession to repair to one of the many refreshment rooms in the town and after procuring glasses and aerated waters, which were paid for, participate in a whisky and soda or a " shandy "as the case might be. This custom has been temporarily stopped, however, by order of the police, whose interpretation of the Act is very much questioned, and it is more than probable that a test case will be brought forward at an early date in order to get a magisterial ruling on the point.—'' Mataura Ensign.'
