POETRY AND PROSE.

She : "WJiat a lovely deep purple blue the sea is." lie : "Yes, it reminds me of a splendid black eye I got last football season." She : "The sky just above the horizon makes me think of one of Turner's pictures at the Tate Gallery." He : "Oh that pinky bit ? I've got a shirt that matches it exactly." She : "1 think there is something infinitely pathetic in the moan of the waves : it always sounds to me like the word's complaint against its everlasting burden of sorrow." He : "Dors it really ? It always sounds to ni<- like a mixture of a 'bus rumbling along and someone emptying pails of dirty water." She : "What a strikingly picturesque figure that old fisherman makes.' He : "I suppose he does, but I wonder why lie patches his blue trousers with red flannel?'' She : J.ook at that fishing-smack just putting out ! I like to picture to myself the hardy mariner sailing forth to gather the silver harvest of the sea in his nets, toiling that he may keep his wife and bairns snug in their quaint tarred cottage." lie: "If lie catches any bloaters like the one I had for breakfast this morning 1 hope he'll put 'em and send his wife out charing tim.il they "v filled out. a bit." He : "I'm hanged if I am. I'm going in to get some beer, and to find out when lunch will be ready. I So long !" I
