POISONOUS ALCOHOL
It is now agreed among scientists and physicians that the value of alcohol as a drug is practically nil. even when taken in small doses, alcohol paralyses the white cells of the blood, rendering them unable successfully to fight the disease germs which find access to the system, and which cells otherwise would attack and kill. Tn an article in the "British Medical Journal." a celebrated German physician proves that peopl" who indulge in alrohol acquire a terrible permanent liability to disease, the elTect of which is to injure the health and equally to reduce the average duration of frleir lives. The Kaiser's present crusade against drinking in the services is due to the fact thai the average age at death of officers in the German army and navy is only forty-eight—an extraordinary low figure for a class of selected lives, and, moreover, there is an exceptionally high mortality from cancer, diabetes, and suicide. »
