At Te Aroha- the Waiorongarnai Hotel was destroyed by fire. A lodger was burned to death. The jury, at the inquest on the victims of the Gore Railway crossing accident, brought in a verdict of accidental death, no blame being attachable to anyone. The couple will be buried at the same time to-day. Disastrous Fires in the North Nelson advises that Saturday lait was one of worst experienced with bush and grass fires. The Baigents sawmill at Aorere with 20,000 ft of timber, Haldanea dairy at Bainham with milking machinies, and Francis Baigents Bawmill at Pigeon Gully were destroyed. Other settlers lost sheep, fire-wood and fencing. Thousands of trees in timber districts were destroyed. The fires have revived at Stanley Brook, Dovedata, Whangapeka and other localities. Grass fires along railway line at Wauti were started by sparks from engines. Two thousand acres of grass were destroyed at Whangare and Oroipelles. Maoris had hard work to prevent their pah from being distroyed. Reports of other fires continue to come to hand.
