OBITUARY.

Two very old and much esteemed residents of Arrowtown in the persons of Mr J. "B Galland and Mr R. Fritchard passed away last Wednesday, the former at his residence and the latter at the residence of his daughter, Mrs W. E. Allen, Dupedin. The late Mr Galland, who was 60 years of age, was born in Melbourne. He followed the occupation of a miner in the early days, his trade being that of a carpenter. During his 30 years' residence in Arrowtown he was employed off and on at mining and carpentering and for a considerable period deceased and bis wife served as wardsman and matron of the Arrow Hospital. The deceased had been sinking for some time past, therefore his end was not unexpected. Hit wife survives him and to her much sympathy is shown in her sad trial.—The late Mr Pritcbard was on a visit to his son-iu-law, Mr W. E. Allen, Dunedin, for a week or so. While there he contracted a severe cold which he was unable to shake off and this, with other complications, hastened his end. Deceased was a native of North Wales and had reached the ripe age of 80 years. He arrived in Victoria in 1854 and was attracted to New Zealand a few years later by the gold discoveries, arriving in Arrowtown in the early sixties. Very soon after he commenced|storekeeping, which he conducted up till his death. The late Mr Pritchard held several public positions in hisday with considerable credit, being a member of the Arrow Borough Council when he died. He alao did a good deal to foster the mining industry in the Arrow. Deceased was greatly respected by a large circle of acquaintances throughout the Wakatipu district and the news of his death was received with much regret. The remains of the late Mr Pritchard were conveyed from Dunedin to Arrowtown last Friday and the funerals of both of above deceased took place cu SaturJay afternoon last. The cortege in each case was very large. The Rev. H. Packe conducted the burial services.

It occasioned a great shock to townspeople ou Thursday last when it became known that Mrs Geisow, relict of the late F. W. F. Geisow, had passed away at her residence, Church Street, that afternoon at 2 o'clock. A few were not even award that she had been unusually indisposed, for though her friends had noticed that she had been failing somewhat for the past year or more, it was only about three weeks prior to her death that she became rather seriously weaker. For some years she had been suffering from rheumatism and almost up till the last it was believed that this was the sole cause of her infirmity, but a more insidious and malignant disease had been working to its appointed end, namely cancer, for it was to one of the forms of this sjourge that she succumbed. Deceased lady was always of a retiring disposition, but in a quiet, unobtrusive way did much good amongst the sick and the needy. She was a most faithful adherent of the Presbyteriau Church in Queenstown and her life was most exemplary, which was but following in the steps of her good husband, who predeceased her by 3 years and 8 mouths. The late Mrs Geisow, who was 69 years of ago, was born at Alloa, Scotland, and came out to Victoria when a girl with the others of the family and her parents. In July of 1871 she was married at luvercargill, N.Z., to the late Franz William Frederick Geisow, then coming up to Queen9town, where she had resided till the time of h«r demise. She leaves one son and three daughters (all grown up) to mourn their loss, and for these the deepest sympathy is felt in their latest bereavement. Four of deceased lady's brothers are still alive in Victoria. The funeral, which was a very largely attended one, took place on Saturday last, the burial service being most reverently and impressively conducted bj Mr Percy Valpy in the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Jas. Wilson,
