UNVACCINATED CHILDREN.

The Dunedin ' Star' states that aggressive measures are to he taken to compel people to vaccinate their children, or, at least to furnish good reason, as provided by the section, why they should not be vaccinated* It is a fact that for some considerable time barely 15 per cent, of the children born have been vaccinated, and the matter is of course, serious in the event of an outbreak of smallpox, a disease which is often hideous in its afte.r-e.li'ects and frequently fatal, and which levies u frightful annual toll of of human life in centres where no preventive is applied. Regarding vaccination, the following facts are recognised as being established : —(1) That whereas in prevaccination days smallpox in the United Kingdon was mainly a disease of infancy and childhood, it is now practically unknown among children which have been well vaccinated ; and (2) that medical men, nurses, and other persons exposed to contagion habitually protect themS3lves by re vaccinating, and never contract the disease.
