WISHING AND HOPING.
In some parts of the world there are. wells railed "wishing wells." People, used to draw water from them and tell one another the sweetest and saddest stories of their lives. Then they would wish all sorts of things for the future, and build castles in the air, hoping that good times would come to them, and that they would live happily, ever after. A curious custom however, was observed at these wells. That was to drop a coin into them and, as it fell, to wish for something very much desired. Some fairy, it was thought, would grant the wish expressed. We douM if anybody ever got his wish that wa.\ . Hut. all the same, we are sine of this, that to wish and hope lot good things is like going to a vu'll to quench one's thirst ; for it reireshes the heart. And even if we don't always get what we wish, wishing and hoping lor it will help m make us worthy of it. and then we deserve as well as desire it. we are far more likely to get it than if we sit down grumbling and despairing till we don't care what happens
