A mandamus was issued directing the Committee to hear and determine the application. The elected members of the Committee (a Prohibition Committee) were ordered to pay ten guineas costs in addition to disbursements, to be ascertained by the Registrar. MINING TROUBLES There is a lock-out of 3000 hands in the Maitland (N.S. Wales) coal mines. It is expected that the trouble will spread as there is a scarcity of coal in Australia and New Zealand. The price to the consumer in both countries is expected to advance. FLOODS IN VICTORIA. Great floods followed heavy rains in Victoria. Townships were submerged. Thousands of live stock were drowned. The Flemington race track was covered. The suburbs of Melbourne were deluged. The police were busy all night rescuing people.
