CARDRONA NOTES.

FKOM OUR OWN COHKESPONTJKNT. IStli September. Pegging out dielging claims, I think ought to be finished now, s.. far as CirdiOua is concerned. The old workings adjoining the township w< re p< g:;-..d ''lf smii • ten days ago, so every available y.ud, from above the township to the junction of the Cardrona and Clutha rivers is now taken up. There his al-o been quite a s' impede to po _' out

claims on I'ue Mutatipu river, two of our residents having made a "spurt'' to see who would be there first. But no doubt your Pern l T< ]■:■■ correspondent will give you all the pai titu..ii • as he is nearer to the scene of ac ion, ii <i I have principally to depend on Mi.in- Kunr.n.r— and people say the is a lying j.d-.

Tne surveyor is here at present engaged measuring and locating the several allotments, mi shortly 1 expect to see Cardrona tiLU.ii!.. bug 1\ on tli-; Stock Exchange, as steps are hem., taken to put the mijonty of the venture-; on the market ; and 1 expect to hear uf L'Ood returns trom at least three iouiths ot tiie claims, when my prophesy of [ two years is hiluihd, "That the clank ot machinery will he reverberating from inn- end of the valley to the other.'' U'e had a vi.-it the we( k before last from Mr James M'George, Cromwell, aud your townsman Mr Titnpany, to view some claims in which they are interested and 1 believe they returned highly satisfied with their piopertic?. I hear Mr Timpany, who has never visited this part of Otage before was very much pleased with what he saw and learned, and he considered his property of much more value than he did previous to his visit. May the realisation be above his anticipation. The Rolling S'Oue Co., at the mouth of Branch Creek, have got the mo-t of tl • timber for their dredge on the gnu id, but as yet the contractor has not put in an appearance. The manager is very reticent on the matter, but Dame Rumour says he is daily expected. Since Mr Footf 's departure our school has been temporarily under the charge of Miss ('amei-jn, out the Committee was advised last Friday that Mr Miack will be here on Tuesday, so before this is iu print, he should have taken up his duties. It is a great drawback to the children, this change of teachers, and as in our case over two months will elapse between the departure of the one and the arrival of the other permanent teacher, it must tell very much against the school at the forthcoming examination. We have been blessed with splendid weather for some weeks past. We had a smart shower of rain, however early on the Sunday morning, Kith instant, causing the, creek to ripe considerably, but at midday it was down to its old level and no damage done. Yesterday (Sunday, 17th instant) it rained the whole day, the river rose to flood height covering the crossing planks. Hut this morning it is down to iis spring level once more, and I have not heard of any damage done.
