THE GLADSTONE COLLAR.
All the world is familiar with Mr. Gladstone's collars, but very few know the origin of the immortal collars. Years ago, when Mr. (jl&dstone was jmt turning his attention towards politics, he left au order for a dozen shirts with a certain seamstress. The seamstress had an apprentice— a giddy thing, who was " keeping company " with a " sojer." Tommy Atkins was in the habit of dropping in while the girl was sewing on Mr. Gladstone's shirt, and in her sbsent-miudeduess she sewed on the collars upside down, the result being that the upper frout edge of the collar slanted forward instead of back, aa was intended. The mistake escaped the eye of the seamstress. The shirts were sent home, and Mr Gladstone took such a fancy to the innovation that he has always ordered the same pattern.
