Elsewhere may be seen an abridged prospectus of a company being formed for the purpose of working seams of brown and bituminous coal recently found on the Qlen Dhu estate, Mataura, aud a few miles only from the railway. We are not able just now t refer more fully to the.matter, but may say that the property and prospects of such an undertaking are spoken of in glowing terms, and the coal is described as of splendid quality by contemporaries. Samples may be inspected at the office of this paper.

Last month's crushing returns for the Achilles Goldfields, Bullendale, are 485 ounces of smelted gold from 650 tons of stone. Owing to the unusually severe frost and shortness of water, 150 tons at grass remained uncrushed. The prospects of this extensive property are as bright as ever, The last returns from the Sew Hoy Big Beach Co. were 32 oa 18gr. of retorted gold. We regret to learn that in consequence of going to the bad for some time past, it was decided at a meeting on Tuesday evening to go into the whole matter of finance, and to report at another meeting on the 30th inst. The following tenders for annual supplies were accepted at the last meeting of the Wakatipu Hospital trustees S. Braden—milk, butter, and eggs ; E. Monson—meat; P. M'Carthy—medical comforts; Mr Thomson—stores and rations; M. O'Meara—Newcastle coal; A. Fraser—burials, There were nine patients remaining in the institution on the 31st ult.

Our Head of Lake correspondent writes: —The residents here are being favored with beautiful weather, and lambs are beginning to make their appearance.—Farmers are only waiting for the frost to break when ploughing will be in full swing.—Mining matters are very quiet just now, but it is understood that the Miners Association intend to send out several parties of prospectors in the spring.—The musical part of our residents mustered in strong force on Saturday week and formed a minstrel troupe, which are now bnsy practicing and rehearsing. They intend to give a performance in conneotion with a bachelors ball to be held shortly. I am told they are going to astonish the people, and I can quite believe it.—Referring to the Ward episode at the County Council meeting, the majority of oar settlers fully endorse the action taken by our representative in supporting the return of Mr Ward, as, although a number of them do not agree politically with him, they consider that, as as a member of the Bluff Harbour Board, they could not get a better representative. The conference of goldfields wardens at Wellington has terminated. The whole of the statutes relating to mining have been consolidated in one bill of over 300 clauses, which is to be laid before the Cabinet this week.

The partnership of Messrs Valpy and Co., Glenorchy, has been dissolved. Creditors of the Gallant Tipperary Q.M. Co. in liquidation must lodge their claims with liquidator, W. Brown, Dunedin, on or before 31st instant. Tenders are invited for the erection of a new Roman Catholic Church at Queenstown —plans and specifications to be seen at Mr P. Butler's on three days only next week, on account of same being sent away to Dunedin afterwards. The time is very short for intending local contractors. Borough annual election of councillors is notified elsewhere.
