GLORIOUS WALTER.
(TO THE EDITOR L.W.M.) Sir.—While the public mind is being exercised over Ward scandals, commercial and political morality, corrupt banking directors, managers and inspectors, it is highly gratifying to know that here in the Alps of Otago, and in the person of Mr W. J. Stanford we possess a regenerator of man* kind, the very soul of honour, the personification of integrity. Fortunate Wakatipu! Until Mr Stanford's advent to the district we were contented to regard ourselves as morally, social* ly and intellectually, neither better nor worse than other communities. Under the wholesome influence of the gentleman referred to we may hope to develop into a community that may yet be regarded as an example to the world. Such a consummation wonld be more gratifying, as Mr Stanford, in the capacity of mine manager must have associated with a fraternity whose probity has never been regarded as exem plary—a class who have lived and fattened on the credulity of the people, a class whose services are valued in proportion to their ability to dissemble. Who, other than a Stanford, could associate with such, and remain the paragon of virtue we find in Mr Stanford. Mr Stanford has twice in this district martyred himself in the interests of public rectitude. Saintships have been earned by smaller sacrifices. Degenerate Wakatipu has occasion to be grateful to Mr Stanford, and probably some day may have the good sense to acknowledge it. What a happy coincidence it would be if simultaneously, the shareholders in the Glenrock Co. were iu a positir to thank Mr Stanford for the long-ex' ted dividend from their Macetown venture.—Yours etc., Scrip-owner. Queenstown, 19th August, 1897.
