The ' Bmce Herald * learns from a pri♦ate letter 41 that St. John's Sunday School, Hilton, is the best in connection with the Diocesan Sunday School Union this year in results of late examinations for 1895, having gained the highest number of marks of all ■chools examined." In the senior division of all examined St. Johu's has carried off three prizes, uue of the scholars in that division being the only one of all gaining full marks and carrying off the first and best prize of all. A remarkable surgical operation, which was virtually the replacement of a nerve, has been performed in the hospital at Newcastle, N. S. W., by Drs Harris and Horsfall. In August la-t a young man received a severe gunshot wound in the thigh, which destroyed the great sciatic nerve, muscle, and sinews. Two months after admission to the hospital an operation was performed and two gun wads several grains of shot, and a piece of trousers cloth were removed from the groin. The wound healed, but he was unable to use the leg, which became paralysed. Ten weeks ago he was re-admitted and the doctors procured and killed a sheep. While the animal was still warm they removed about six inches of the sciatic nerve, and, putting the patient tinder the influence af an auaesthetic, made an incision in the thigh and introduced and stitched in the nerve from the sheep. Galvanic treatment was applied till the end of December, when the patient was able to leave the hospital and can now get about with the assistance of a stick. He has a little difficulty in raising the foot, but is rapidly recovering the full use of the limb. He suffers no pain or inconvenience from the borrowed nerve.

The 'British Australian ' contains a report of the eleventh annual meeting of Dalgety and Co. (Limited), which must be exceeding pleasant reading for the shareholders. It shows that the affairs of the company are managed very efficiently, and that it is consequently in a highly prosperous condition. A foreign scientist has a new test for death, With a candle produce a blister on hand, foot, or body. If the blister, on opening with a needle or other instrument, be found to contain fluid of any kind there is still life in the body. Last June Dick Crawford brought his twelve-months old child, suffering from infantile diarrhcea, to me. It had been weaned at four months old and had always been sickly. I gave it the usual treatment in such cases but without benefit, The child kept growing thinner until it weighed but little mGre than when born, or perhaps ten pounds. I then started the father to-giving Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. Before one bottle had been used a marked improvement was seen and its continued use cured the child. Its weakness and puny constitution disappeared and its father and myself beleive the child's life was saved by Ihis remedy. J. T. Marljw, M.D., Tamaroa, til. For sale by L. Hotop.
