THE GERMAN EMPEROR & HIS TROOPS.

The German Emperor attended the celebration by the Itifle Battalion of the Guards, at Lichterfelde, of the twentyfifth anniversary of the capture of Le Bourget, near Paris, by the Germans. Lieut.-Colonel Pawlowski, commander of the regiment, proposed his Majesty's health, and assured ihim of the constant fidelity of the battalion. The Emperor, in reply, thanked the Colonel for the loyal sentiments he had expressed, and continued as follows "Only a few weeks ago I rode along: the route which this battalion traversed under the hail of bullets on its way to Amanvillers on ISth August, IS7O. I and those who accompanied me had only one feeling. namely, to bare our heads in silence It is incomprehensible to me how a single man could have come out alive. When I look for the motive spirit of these deeds, I find that it is the deed of my grandsire. I trust that the three pillars of the army—namely, loyalty, implicit obedience, and the most de-I voted bravery—may long continue. My 1 grandfather, in his order of the day to Prince Frederick Charles, declared, •Without 16th August there would have J been no ISth August (Gravelotte); without ISth August no 2nd September 1 (Sedan)." May these great days remain imprinted on our minds in ineffaceable letters. We will keep and improve what our forefathers won. May the Rifle Guards, in peace or war, add laurels to their ancient glory ! In this hope I raise my glass. Hurrah
