BAD SPELLING OF GREAT MEN.

A great deal too much has been made by Sir Walter Scott and Lord Macaulay about Dundee's bad spelling. It was no worse than that of his contemporaries. Here are some samples in proof from the Leven and Melville Papers. Duke of Hamilton—"l cannot answer yours till the nixt so shall only a id that I ame, <kc. I hop your Lop. will acquaint the king with what I have writt." Earl of Eglinton—"l cannot sufetiantly apologia for my self, for the only fait I ever was giltie of." Sir John Dalrymple—- " I see clearly the Lords binch in Parliament is very right, except Ros, Annandaill, and Mourton. The barrons are pretty weill, bot the borrows are all possest. Argyl is not yet arryved." Lord Melville—" Between nyn and ten of the cloake last nioht at Hamptown Court.' Marquis of Atholl—" I understand that my poor unfortunate sone Mungo oues his inlargement to your favour." Lord Balcarrea—sell order me to wreit to the Yicount of Dundie and procure the Leard of B'airs liberty or I must go to close prison again "—Sir Wiliiam Lockhart—- " Som tyms tuo, thrie, or four did it.'

. • Pray your Lordship mynd my brother Harie for L. C. Douglas compsnie."—" Wm. Carstares." by R. H. Story.
