John Robertson—Extended claim. W. jeid— License to mine. It is our painful duty to record the sad death of Mr Henry Mandert—another old resident—and one of our oldest inhabitants. On his father's side he was descended from a wealthy family of good repute (the Manders, of Dublin) and on his mother's side was of Spanish extiaction. Although hailing from "dear dirty Dublin " he was horn during the temporary stay of his mother in London. His school education was finished at one of tue great schools of Knglacd—Rugby. He had a bright intellect, keen perceptive faculties and a ready writer. He took great Bitterest in all other public matters and, befoie coming here some 23 years ago, took an active part in Victorian po!iti<:s —chiefly at Avoca. As might be expected his liuht could not be hid umler a bushel when he took up his abode at Queenstown, where he led an active life and lent valuable aid in building up our social fa t, he was widely known throughout the VVakatipu from the numerous positions he held in our various puhlic organisations, ami as member of the old Otayo Provincial Council and la'er on (about U years since) as representative for this district in Parliament. He held more offices than we can recoll, ct; was secretary to the old Town Board, the Jockey Club, Hospital, etc., town clerk to the Borough Council and first clerk of the Lake County Council ; and besides these things, he carried on his private business as a commission agent, etc., often givin» valuable advice to miners (as a " bush lawyer ") on questions of law. But, for some years before death his health began to fail, and latterly he was all but incapable of any useful work. He was intimately connected with this journal almost from the beginning, but, of course, not lately. Upon the last hours of his career we must draw a view—as a " thick cloud." The brief facts, as disci >sed at inquest on the body, are, it appears, that a few davs before death he was visited by a miner and an old acquaintance. James Towers, and that they indulged, alas! too f reel v. He was the victim of chronic t'out and rheumatism, and on Sunday complained of severe pain*. Soon after taking to bed he was, d-mhtless, much worse and (his brutal compmio i neglecting to call in medical aid) he wat found dead in the morning.
