Southland Hospital and C.A. Board.

The annual meeting of the above Board, and he'd at luvercargill on Wednesday last, attended by the Chairman (Mr J. W. Bain, and Messrs H. \Y. Hall, •f. K. Hannah. A. Baldey, G. Heller, A. Dunlop and Dr llodgkinson. The demands of the various country hospitals for the sums of money required for their maintenance were granted ad follows: —Wakatipu Hospital, £535 ; Arrow, £ll4 10s; and Wallace and Fiord, £570. The Southland Hospital Trustees applied for £1530 as the sum required by them tor ihe ensuing year. The Chairman said that inasmuch as the Southland Hospital Trustees had nut brought forward the amount of cash they had on hand, the Board was entitled to object to its amount. Mr Heller moved, seconded by Mr Baldly—•'That the Board objects to the demand of the Southland Hospital Trustees on the following grounds (1) That the demand is excessive; (2) that the balance of cash in hand as shown by the return dated oih April, 1887, has r.ot been brought forward for the service of the current ye.ar. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the CoVnial Treasurer in terms of section 60 of the Hnapi'als and Charitable Aid Act, and that Mr John Tnrnbnll be appoi ited to represent the Board at the hearing of thi* appeal." The Chairman said that at the end of last year the Trustees' balance-sheet showed that they had £S'23 13s 9d. Since theu they had been incurring heavy expenditure in alterations and repairs, but even allowing for thee works there would still be a balance of ££3l lls6d. The appeal would be heard by a commission consisting of a commissioner appointed by the Board, the Resident Magistrate (appointed by the Colonial Treasurer), and a commissioner appointed by the Hospital Tiustees. Air Dunlop moved as an amendment that the demand be referred back to the Trustees for further information. Dr Ho seconded the amendment, which was negatived and the motion carried. The Treasurer's balance-sheet showed that during the ; ".3t year the receipts had 1 een £3434 16', anil the expenditure £3430. The amount which would be required for the ensuing year would l>e £6546 4s 2d and a rate of lAd in the £ would provide the amount required, about £SO.
