WESLEYAN METHODISM IN GREAT BRITAIN.

(to the editor of the lake wakatip mail.) Sir,—Absence from home prevented my seeing your issue of 28th January until a fortnight since. After reading "Observer's" letter therein, I am free to confess that I have been mistaken—not in the figures submitted to your readers, nor in my inferences from them—hut in the character of my opponent. I supposed he was a gentl- man, or at any rate a man willing to give due consideration to facts anil figures, even though they conflicted with his wishes and prepossessions. His last letter is proof positive to the contrary. Supplying no new data and refuting none of my arguments, he descends to abuse and insinuations which at once stamp his character. It is the old lawyer's story illustrated, "No case; abuse the plaintiff's attorney." For controversy on such lines I have neither time uor inclination.

Permit me then simply to state, in conclusion, that I have descended to no subteifuge, nor have I said all I could ou my side of the subject. I am, therefore, not ashame I that my uame should appear in connection with these letters, and certainly do not need to defend myself against "Observer's" vituperation. Meantime, he may be assured that as " hard words break no bones," neither can they be accepted in place of argument. Thanking you for your courtesy, I am, etc., Wm. Morlet. Dunedin, March 8, 1887.

[As the discussion on ahovenamed subject has, although slowly, been continued in these columns for some months, and each writer should have exhausted all his resources, the correspondence must here cease so far as this journal is concerned.—Ed. L. W.M.}
