Dpnedin, this day, 10 a.m. At the Waste Lands Board meeting yesterday, it was decided to open the following runs at last upset prices :—No. 337, Lake VVanaka, 25,540 acres; No. 337 a, do., 23,600 acres; No. 315, MavoraLake, 64,200 acres; No. 326, Manapouri, 3000 acres; No. 533, do., 39,300 acres; No. 358, Matatuki, 23,100 acres; and Nos. 381 to 492, Puysegur Point, 6900 to 14,300 acres. It was resolved to offer the undermentioned at reduced rentals :—No. 25, Wakatipu, 18,000 acies, £2O; No. 245, Tanas, 11,970 acres, £150; No. 239, do., 12,141 acres, £100; No. 403. Hawkedun, 33,700 acres, £IOO. At the annual district meeting, at Port Chalmers, of Manchester United Oddfellows, it was decided to hold a new meeting in Dunediu. The following officers were appointed : —P.G.M., Bro. Ibheston ; D.P.G.M., Bro. Smellie; P.C.S., Bro. Black; D.T., Bro. Robin ; and auditor, Bro. Gardiner. David Kirk, an expressman aii old resident, Kingstreet north, 50 years of age, committed suicide yesterday afternoon by hanging himself in his stable. Deceased had been drinking heavily, lie leaves a grown up family. Daniel Kiik Rhodes, late stationmaster and postmaster, Waikouaili, has been committed for trial on several charges of embezzlement. The 'Frisco mad arrived at Auckland yesterday afternoon, five days late. The Cabinet have decided that the date of the Queen's ascension shall be proclaimed a general holiday in honor of jubilee. Punher celebrations to be left to public bodies, unless Parliament decides that the Government shall take part in them. The Rev. Henry Ward Btecher died on the Bth instant. LATER. The argument before the Court of Appeal at Christchurch in Hall's case was concluded last evening. The Chief Justice intimated that judgment would be given to-morrow. At the ini|uest on David Kirk, the jury returned a verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary

insanity. The Mikado troupe are drawing crowded houses.

There are numerous cases of typhoid fever in Duuedin, probably owing to the water, which is very bad.

The Wellington Press states that it is an open secret—in fact, it has been publicly announced — that Mr J. C. Brown, who has gone to England to float the Blue Spur claims into a company, has been accredited by Government to the Agent-General. Gunner M'Coikindale, the carbine champion at recent Association meeting, was awarded a public reception on his return to Oamaru last evening. STAR CABLEGRAMS. Los Dor, March 9. In the House of Commons last night the essential points of cloture rules were passed. W heat is firm, owing to extensive hull purchases at New York. The Irish members objected to vote a grant in aid of the Adelaide Exhibition, because it had not been assisted by Government, vote was ultimately passed. The sum of £30,000 has been proposed as part of a vote of £IIO,OOO to Captain Brenner for his torpedo rights. The general impression prevails that Russia will remain quiescent with regard to Bulgarian affairs. It is now rnmouied that the treaty between Austria, Germany and Italy contemplates an offensive as well as a defensive action. It is generally understood that the prospects of peace are increasing, though the continental powers continue warlike preparations. Further disturbances are expected both in Bulgaria and Servia. The Pope has again offered his services » mediator in the Bulgarian difficulty.
