The following extract from a New York journal is a good instance of the altered tone of the American Press in reference to Protection:—"With Russia driving us out of the European petroleum trade; India underselling us in the graiu market, and Egyptian and Surat cotton hecomiug ponderous items of British import, it does begin to look as if the time was not fur distant when the United States would have to l>e more interested in the preservation of its vast export trade than in propping up a few favored home productions by a tariff which does not benefit labor more than a tithe of what it takea from it."
