Dunedin, this day, 1.40 p.m. The N.Z. Co.'s mail steamer Aorangi arrived from Plymouth yesterday afternoon, making a splendid passage, including stoppages, of 40 days 12 hours—the fastest yet made to the colony. Majo- Sumpter lias received word from Colonel E. Wliitmore that tents for the Easter encampment have arrived. A large number of tents required for the Easter encampments at Wanganni and Oamaru, just received from London, have been on order for two years. Colonel Whitmore expects 1000 volunteers will be under cauvaa at Wanganui and 2000 at Oamaru.

William Brookes was fined £25 and his son £5 at the District Magistrate's Court here this morning for netting trout in the Selwyu river. A shark was captured in the Lower Harbour yesterday evening, which measured fullv 19 feet in length and 8 feet round the girth. The monster, which was eventually killed off Observation Point,' and afterwards hauled up to the graving dock by four boats, weighed over two tons.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. The first day's races on Wednesday of the Dunedin Jockey Club autumn meeting were very successful —the attendance ot spectators being large, the weather fine, and the racing, on the whole, good. The greatest interest was centered on the Cup, for which six acceptois started. The sum of £12,323 was passed through the totalisators. The following are the results of the various events—Handicap Hurdle Race, of 100 sovs.—W. W. Green's Trapper, 1; H. Lunn'sKingask, 2 ; and Hobb's Borderman, 3. Champagne Stakes—P. Butler's Artillery, 1; Webb's Ruby, 2; and H. Goodman's Apropos, 3. Dunediu Cup of 1000 sovs., with sweepatakes of 15 sovs each, added; the second horse to receive 200 sovs., and third 100 sovs. Two miles and a distance—F. N. George's Nelson, 1; J. Marshall's Necklace, 2 ; G. M'Lean's Lady Emma, 3. The race was keenly contested and won only by a neck. Time 3 min. 54$ sees. The Selling Race of 60 sovs, was won by H. Goodman's Billy; the Publicans Handicap of 100 sovs., by R. Browu's Molly Bawn; and the Maiden Plate by Mr Sberwin's Qnibble.

Yesterday was favorable for racing of the Jockey Club's meeting as regards weather, but the attendance was smaller than might be expected. The principal event of the day (Jockey Club Handicap of 400 Bovs.) went to Mr Marshall's Necklace (the niare which pressed Nelson so haul for the Clip) Derringer, 2; and Tasman, 3. There were some exciting finishes for some of the other events. The Tally-Ho Handicap was w« nby Kingask; the City Stakes by Sierra; the Railway Plate by Albany ; and the Welter Handicap by Titbit. The handicap ou both days has worked out decidedly well. Speculation was nearly as brisk yesterday as on Cup day despite the smaller attsndanee. The sum of £10646 was put through the totalisator, making a total for the two days of £22,979.
