Hospital Maintenance and management.

The number .of the colonial hospMb Is thirty - seven. J.'ona have been either -added to the list or taken from it for several years, with the solitary exception of the Sanatorium at Rotorua. Some small addilions have been made to the accommodation fur patients at Gisborne, Hokitika, Invercarviil, Kumars, Napier, New Plymouth, Qitcenstoun, Thames, Wftnganni, and Westport. In several instances the cMef reason for providing a local hc«pital has been the want of a resident medical practitioner, for whom no sufficient inducement existed in ihc ahcetice of a Government subsidy. It is scarcely necessary to point out that this ts a very extravagant way of subsidizing a surgeon, to whom the salary '-aid id ofteu quite disproportionate to the hospital work which he is called upon to perform. Setting asile this reason, which would scarcely be a matter for Government to consider, I believe that t!ic following hospitals might, without inflicting any treat hardship, ho at or.ce abolished—namely, Arrow town, Grey town, Patea, Picton Waiuute, Aksroa. The expenditure upon these rix hospitals con-si'l-nMy xeceds £3,000 annually, of which sum cot.s ; derVuiy more than cr.c-half is contributed by the ( Jcrcrr.l Government.
