THE WIFE'S MANAGEMENT.
The majority of women are less reckless in the matter of expenditure than men; therefore when the family finances are limited, the wife in the best disburser of the funds. And if she is worthy to be the wife of an honest man, she will do her best to make that money bring as much comfort into the home as possible, and in no case will she allow her feminine love for the beautiful to beguile her into extravagance. But we must not expect miracles. If the husband has treated her like a child for live years, and shall at length come to his st uses and decide to act toward her as an
intelligent woman, he will not expect that she will display the judgment the sensible man's wife across the street does, for she has had just five years' experience in the use of her powers that his short-sightedness has deprived his wife of. Where the income of the family is sufficient to allow all the comforts and many of the luxuries of modern living, there arise difficulties that are harder to adjust. For here love of dress and desire for home adornment is given some scope, and we know what tyrants they become if left unchecked by reason and a firm will. But the best plan in this case is for husband and wife to agree upon a plan of living that shall bring all the expenses of the year as far within the limits of their income as their courage will permit Then they can, after due thought and experience, proportion the various expenses of " house," " dress," "charity,"' "incidentals," and so on, as far as they may see fit to particularise, and this done each one will have an intelligent idea of what he or she is striving for. The woman as well as the man in this case becomes an interested party in the fimily finances. And the man that has never given his wife an opportunity to show what she can do with money will, in nine cases out often, be thoroughly surprised at the economy she will practise and enjoy, because she knows what she is doing.
