SUCCESS OF THE ELECTRIC MACHINERY AT THE PHCENIX MINE.
It is very gratifying to learn, after weeks of anxiety on the part of those most interested, that the working of the electerial machinery, etc., in connection with the Phojuix crushing battery, Skippers Creek, has, so far, fully answered expectations, although we understand that a large driving wheel and one or two other minor alterations will lie required before the full benefit can be derived of this new motive power. On Wednesday, the manacer, Mr Fred Evans, went to the works at the head (Left-hand branch of Skippers Creek), and started one generator with a 50-horse power Pelton wheil, which was dm en to the proper speed, and the result obtained was the driving of 15 stamper head*, hut not quite up to the full speed, owing to the intermediate pully not I ting sufficiently larire. The result was considered exceedingly satisfactory. After this the two generators were coupled, according to the plana forwarded by the electric engineer, London, hut they worked oidy as a generator and motor. Yesterday Mr W. Priuce, the local engineer, coupled the generators according to his own \ iews, but unfortunately, information of the result had not reached the manager (who is in Queenstown) this afternoon, in consequence, it is stared, of some laches iu the telegraph department, which, for some reason appears to have stopped communication with the reefs by private telephone of the Phueuix Company. With regard to the prospects of the Phoenix nine, we are happy to learn that they are good—letter than usual. The battery is turning out from 60 or 70 ounces of gold per day the stone yielding a I tout three ounces per ton—with 20 stinipei-8 driven by steam. tis expected that, on Monday, this latter power will be superseded by the electric force.
