SCENE IN A GLASGOW CHURCH.

An exciting and somewhat painful occurence took place in London Road U. P. Church, of which the Rev. Dr George Jeffrey is minister. The esteemed pastor was on Sunday engaged preaching elsewhere, and hit pulpit was occupied by a worthy and respected minister of the West. The passage chosen for the morning lepson waa the 35th chapter of Isaiah, " Tne wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and shall blossom as the rose." By way of preface, the reverend preacher began to say that Hebrew symbolism and allegory had often ft double meaning. Here, hwever, be was loudly interrupted by a woman in tbe area, who rose to her feet and begged to differ with him. Whether the phrase, " double meaning," did not satisfy her intellectual palate, and that " two-fold aspect " would have suited better, or whether in her estimation the speaker was taking unwarrantable liberties with the text, was at first unable to be known. The minister, after a pause, resumed, and had occasion to mention a Messianic term, when she loudly demanded that the name should be given in full. The excitement in the church now became intense, as the woman gesticulated and tossed books about in a manner which showed that the position she had taken up was uncompromising in the extreme. Sever- ! al gentlemen stepped out of their pews | and led the unfortunate perron away, but not till a most painful impression I was produced over the large congregation assembled. The discourse wai I thereafter proceeded with. — Herald.
