+ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Dunedin, Thursday, 7.51 p.m. It is reported that small-pox has again broken out in Sydney. Three cases have also occurred in Brisbane. Five actions of the aggregate amount of £6,000 have been commenced against Government in connection with the Railway accident at Kensington crossing. The Bowen has arrived at Port Chalmers, from Foo Chow, with a cargo of tea. The 'Frisco mail is expected to arrive in Dunedin to-night. Forrester, recently a publican near Dunedin, who was arrested at the Bluff some days since, and brought to Dunedin, whilston his way to Melbourne, was, after liberation, again arrested at the Bluff on Wednesday night, on a charge of refusing to maintain his illegitimate children, and has been remanded to Dunedin. At the half-yearly meeting of the Colonial Bank shareholders, yesterday, the report recommending a dividend of 6 per cent, was adopted. In his iemarks the Chairman said that money, to the amount of four millions, had been invested under mortgage during the last twenty months in New Zealand. The inquiry into the management of the Dunedin Benevolent Institution drags along wearily, and parties differ greatly on the character of affairs. The Herald Wellington correspondent telegraphs that Mr Brogden entertains the idea of associating himself with the construction of the Otago Central Railway, and will probably visit Dunedin shortly in connection therewith. A petition is being signed by settlers in the Tuapeka, Beaumont and Roxburgh Parliament to extend the railway line to Roxburgh. The steamer Samson, some years ago trading between Dunedin and Oamaru, is ashore on the \\ aitara River, and will likely become a total wreck. At the Tapanui Coursing meeting yesterday, Harmony and Homily divided the stakes, contrary to expectation. There is a temporary stoppage of traffic on the Roslyn tramway, caused by a slight fault in tho steel rope. Another rope is on the road, and traffic will be resumed very shortly. The ship Republic, from Melbourne to Callao, has gone ashore at the latter port, and is expected to become a total wreck. Another case of smallpox is reported to have broken out in Sydney. An old and respected resident of Riverton, Mr J. M'Naughton, was missed some days ago, and today his body was recovered in the Aparima estuary. He had recently showed signs of mental derangement. Seven hundred pounds have been collected for the Laycock testimonial. There are signs from Wellington pending the noconfidence motion being unsettled. The total yield of gold, according'the Goldfields report, shows an increase of nearly 18,000 ounces over the yield of 1879. But March quarter of 1881, shows a falling-off of 28,000 ounces. The gold revenue for 1881 was:—Naseby, 1312 ounces ; Cromwell, 923; Lawrence, 950; Blacks and St Bathans, 203 ; Clyde, 160 ; Mount Benger, 304 ; Arrow, 477; Queenstown, 312; Manuherikia, 143 ; Dunedin, 244; Kumara, 731; Greymouth 877; Reefton, 1,066; Westport and Charleston, 1,069. The division on the no-confidence motion in the House of Representatives did not take place last night, but will probably be taken to-night. Latest from Wellington states that the Government have ?, majority of five votes safe, if Mr Driver is unpaired. The Crown Lands Department has issued its report. It is proposed to reserve large areas for tree planting in the treeless portions of Otago. For dealing with the rabbit pest united action under the control of Government, is suggested. The Waste Lands Committee have reported, that the restoration of the 20 per cent, of land fund to counties is fair and reasonable, and recommends accordingly. PARLIAMENTARY. Wellington, Thursday, 8 p.m. The annual report on the Goldfields was presented to Parliament last night. The Report states that there has been unusual activity on the goldfields of the Colony during the past year. It is freely stated that Government intend taking action against County Councils guilty of breaches of provision of Section 13 of the Public Works Act. Lake and Southland Councils are the only defaulters in Otago. The No-confidence debate still continues. The Government have, beyond doubt, a majority of four, and it is agreed between both sides that the House will not rise until the division takes place, which will probably be continued to-morrow morning. On resuming at half-past seven o'clock night, the House was unusually crowded in aV parts. " Although the Opposition will be defeated, jet the impression is that Government will suffer a greater defeat by being compelled to withdraw their measures to save themselves. Mr Jones is now speaking, and making a slashing speech against the Government. + LATEST CABLE NEWS. London, July 24th. The Right Hon. Mr Gladstone has declined, on account of the state of his health, the honor of a banquet organised by the Ministry. Telegrams from Candahar report that Ayoub Khan has again made overtures of peace to the Ameer. The result has not transpired. No clue has yet been made of anyone connected with the placing of infernal machines on board the Malta, at Liverpool. The Press urged Government to make exhaustive search into the matter, and punish persons concerned. Telegrams to hand from Tunis announce that, in consequence of the hostile attitude of the Arab tribes at Sabis, on Tunisian coast, the French war ships are engaged bombarding that town. A body of troops has landed in the town from the fleet, and succeeded in driving back the Arabs, and obtaining possession of the town, which is now occupied by the French. .
