The Southland Hussars propose to take part _in thcforthcoining Volunteer encampment-—SO desiring to come, at least, but we understar.il that the number will probably have to be limited to thirty. Their presence would certainly add eclat to the affair. The Duncdin Companies cannot tell how many will come till the 17th inst. All that has been done so far by the local Committee is to ascertain what response is likely to be obtained. So far it is favorable. A meeting of the Committee will he held to-night, and also on Monday evening ; and, for the credit'of the district, it is to be hoped members will act energetically, and attend. T:i the Wellington Lunatic Asylum inquiry the "case for the defence'' is now being fully gone into, and already a large mass of evidence has been taken materially rebutting the allegations of complaints, and divesting them of their extremely sensational character.

All doubts about the Governor's visit to this district are set at rest. His Excellency will arrive here on the 19th inst., proceeding immediately, we are informed, to the Head of the Lake, departing on Monday morning—or possibly not till Tuesday -as he has promised to attend a special gathering of the Caledonian Society, Dunedin, on Wednesday. The visit is only a semi-official one, and does not demand any public demonstration such as that accorded Hercules Robinson.

St. Patrick's Day, Tuesday next, is likely to pass off here unobserved, with the exception, of course, of a parade by the Garrison Band. What with the Governor's visit and the proposed Easter Demonstration the residents have enough in hand. We understand that Mr O'Meara, County Valuer and Collector, has been suspended pending next meeting of the Council, for disobeying orders from the Chairman. This is the last outcome of that Rabbit Board business, one of the subjects about which so much bad blood was shown at the last meeting of the County Council. Mr Voight, Government Inspector for the Kingston Railway sheds as well as for the Queenstown Jetty, informs us that the first-named work will probably be finished next week by the contractor, Mr Rhodes.

The Rev. D. Ross' lecture on his tour to Victoria, did not take place last night, on account of paucity of attendance. Wo understand it has been postponed till Wednesday evening, when the lecture will be interspersed with vocal and instrumental music.

It is reported that the pipes for the Arrowtown Waterworks—which were expected to arrive in a few davs—have not yet left England, a cable message having been received that the pipes ordered are too small for the intended purpose.

Last Monday a clean sheet was presented to Major Keddell in the R.M. Court ; but we understand that, according to present appearances, litigants will make up for lost time at next sitting.

The local papers state the revenue received by the Vincent Rabbit Trustees last year amounted to £515 19s 7d and the expenditure was £3OO for Inspector's salary and £SB 13s 6d for contingencies. We are informed that, the agreement between the Wakatipu S.N. Co., and the proprietors of other Lake Steamers has not yet been ratified, but it is stated that terms may yet be concluded although the data of grace expired on Tuesday. The cricket match, at Sydney, between the Australian team and a combined eleven of New South Wales and Victoria, was won on Tuesday by the latter, with 246 runs to spare. We regret to announce the death, on Sunday, of Mr 11. M'Morran, at the White Horse Hotel, Blacks district. The cause is reported to have been sunstroke. Deceased was an old resident of this district, and of a generous disposition. About three years ago he was a licensee of the Greenstone run, and since then had a farm at Hayes Lake. At Fridav's meeting cf the Southland Jockey Club, the District Handicap of 50 sova., was won by Mr R. Kidd's Tera; Mr Smithja Hornpipe being second. In the Handicap Hurdle race, Mr Butlers Agent was first. Mr W. Kirk's Wiil-if-I-can second, and Mr Reveney's Parnell, third. The Jockey Club Handicap went easily to Mr H. Prince's Hilarious, Mr Chaafe's Atlantic being second. Sylvamis, Nautilus and two other horses were scratched. We have been requested to draw attention to advertisement in another column of Lyons and Hart's Leviathian Consultation (four events) on the Christchurch Autumn meeting. The Otago Acclimatisation Society at a meeting Friday afternoon, decided—partly in compliance with a resolution passed at a public meeting at Milton—to ask the Governor to proclaim the shooting season in Otago as follows :—For native game (hiis excepted) for coursing hares, and for shooting Colifornian quail and cock pheasants, from May Ist to July 31st. Pheasants not to be shot within the Lake district, and the area to be under proclamation to be the same as for trout fishing license fee. The want of rain has been severely felt for three last weeks. Two showers that fell during this period were tantalising, and produced no beneficial effect. Cattle and sheep country is quite parched up and very little grass obtained. Cultivated clover paddocks exist, so far as feed is concerned, as bare land without a sign of vegetation. The drought is also beginning to press heavily upon all and °the towns require water as much as the County. We observe that those old favorites—Jenny Nye and Mr Fisher are about again visiting the district with some additional talent to their small but complete Combination Company. They appear at the Town Hall, Queenstown, this- evening ; and at Arrowtown to-morrow. Parties who have registered dogs need not renew their registration before Ist proximo, but they gain no advantage in not doing so, as by clause 8 of the new Act all licenses granted expire on the last clay of December in each year. The license issued to old certificate holders is for only nine months at the old fee of ten shillings, but both the County and Borough Council have taken a lenient view, and will remit 2s 6d, less Is cost of dog collar. The advance report of the N. Z. L. t 31. Agency Company, just received, presents a very satisfactory aspect to the shareholders. After making due provision for all losses and liabilities, and declaring a dividend at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum to shareholders, the directors arc able to carry £IO,OOO to the reserve fund, and over £6OOO to the credit of profit and loss account. England has another little war on hand. The Ashantees, to the number of 20,000, are on the march against Cape Coast Castle, where an Ashantee chief, the death of whom is much desired by the Ashantee monarch, is being befriended. The garrison, under the command of Sir Samuel Rowe, will act strictly on the defensive until reinforcements arrive from England. Mr W. L. Davis is the successful contractor for supplying the machinery for the Invincible Company, Head of the Lake. As Mr Davis and his brother are largely interested in tins mine, an assurance is thus given that a good crushing plant will be obtained, and which Mr Davis proceeds shortly to Castlcmaine or Bendigo to secure. The Company are busy putting in their low level tunnel. * The reef in the prospecting one proved over four feet wide, so that when they again reach the reef they should have an immense body of stone to stope out, besides having the surface reef available and the large slips. The battery required we understand, will be a powerful one, if present prospects are sustained. In the Warden's Court on Monday before Major Kcddell, the following was the only business disposed of :—Sutherland and Murdoch ; application for an extended claim of one acre in Maori Gully, Upper Shotover.
