LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL.

A spcci.il meeting of above body took plac e at the Council Chambers on Monday last. Present Messrs J. Edgar (chairman) T. Hicks. F.H.Daniel, J. Douglas and Mr J. Malaaghan. Harbor Board Election. It was proposed by Dr Douglas, seconded by MrMalaghan and carried—that Mr J. 0. M'Ardeil be elected a member of the Bluti' Harbor Board to represent Lake County. Millers Flat Road. The report read from the County Engineer recommended that the mad by C. Johnston's for which tenders had been received at last meeting, should be adopted, as the proposed deviation by Scotts would in addition to cutting, necessitate also the construction of a bridge. The engineer, however, recommended that a portion of the proposed deviation frnn Speargrass Flat to Arrow should be formed and gravelled for some 1850 links. Ordered that the last named work should stand over till next meeting, but it was resolved on the motion of Dr Douglas and Mr Hicks —That \V. Davis'tender fur x 159, opened at last meeting, be accepted, The unsuccessful tenderers fur the work were from :—J. Henderson & Co, £154 I3s7;J. At ley, i'i>:3 3s 3; D. P. Cash £lB5 Is; and \V. Saunders, Conference with Ministers. The Council then discussed various matters to be brought before the Hon. Messrs Stout and Ballan ;e, and a programme was drawn up of matters to be submitted by a deputation to wait upon Ministers that evening.

Our Lower Shotover correspondent, writing under date 11th instant, says:—The animal meeting for the election of a "School Committee took place on the "27th nit. Nine gentlemen were nomir.ated i and after a ballot was taken the following were declared elected :—Messrs F. M'Bride, J. Humphrey,—Pa tton, W. T. Marshall, W, Sabine and J Chegwidden. At the first meeting of the newly elected Committee, held on the 31st Mr J. Flii.t was unanimously appointed Chairman, an 1 Messrs F. M'Bride and Jno. Neill, Treasurer and Secretary respectively, for the ensuing yeir.—The W >rk at the bridge progresses slowly and it is to be hoped that no unnecessary clelry may now take place in its being pushed on to completion. —The forthcoming election causes very little stir at present, but, doubtless, as the d.iy of polling approaches the dormant energies of our "-free and independent" will be reanimated, and onu considerable excitement may be expected.—The Crops now betoken a speedily approaching harvest, and with peasonable weather our fanners will be busy with the reaper in about a fortnight or so. Thomson and Bkattif. hr.ve opened largo ship meats of Si-kino Goods purchased by their agent in the British markets, and they have coons in great variety" coming forward.
