QUATZ REEFS AT MACETOWN.
During 111? last few* days a prosper' ing claim Lhs been upplied for by Hall and Symonds in a tributary of (he -12 MiW'OrVek called Sawyer's (tuily. ihe reef is .in *' soli'd" 'country and about t'>ree feet-w-ide ? the gold is course and, shows very freely, ihe stone crushes at the rate «f about ten ounces Jo, the ton, the outcrop of t'ue reef is abortt thirty feet in length and its course is nearly North aftd South. Should tlie feet', on being further tTt vef 'ped, continue to show the same iTernge'size and richness, it will prove ot 'inmense value. Arrangements are in progress, for ablating sufficient capital to erect a small battery f in five first instance as every advantage., is, ufftordod,. by-the 12-Mi ! e Creek for working by water power, and a good pack road of about a mile from the reef to the junction of Sawyer's Gully hiis been provided by nature. The 12-Mile Creek has a very steep fall and power could.bo obtained very easily,
as a pressure of UK) feet , could be got by going a rery short distance up the creek. Altogether the place is admirably adapted for a site for a battery, Sawyer's being a fine level gully and containing Home bush. A water right has been applied for by the prospectors at this place,
they hare also taken up a claim on the diriding range between the Arrow and Shotover about two miles from the.spot just mentioned and in which case also a good • natural pack track to the site proposed. for a battery exists from the claim. At this second claim no defined reef has yet been struck but a large qmn'ily of stone 41 a blow," as it is called,—showing fine gold both to the sight and by prospects is visible, and worth two or three " ounces To the ton. So it is thought by the prospects that if a defined reef can be got there ifc-'witL.b? rich, seeing that the turface stone contains such good prospects. doubt thesa discoveries.-will Rive a fresh impetus to prospecting as soon as the miners in the neighborhood have had an opportunity of examining into their value. The new fivehead at the Homeward Bonnd Claim is all vbut completed and will, it is hoped, be shortly at work. Mr L Kesta,. the contractor, has
fhown great energy and capability in carrying
out this work with very imperfect applicanees. He has been fortunate .in,securing the services of a Chinese carpenter, Who is very ingenious and energetic, arid by whom lie has been greatly aided in overcoming the difficulties of the task. This battery is-worked by a 12ft. overshot waterwheel, worked bv a race from the 12-Mile Creek, and the battery is erected in the bed ■ t the creek. Barclay's and iiaven have had men at work cutting tracks from the mine so that plenty of quartz will be available as soon as the oattery is ready which will be in a few days A quartz leader has been tak< n up by this p-urty in flush Creek,-12-Mile t it is about a foot wide and shows good gold..
