At the nomination for the Mayoralty on Thursday, there were only two candidates nominated, namely, Mr M. J. Malaghan, proposed by Mr J. T. Surman, and seconded by Mr W. M'Conochie ; and Mr B. Hallenstein, proposed by Mr G. Atkinr, and seconded by Mr J. H. Pasco, neither candidate were present, and the proceedings closed very tamely, with a vote of thanks to tne Presiding Officer, Mr. Betts. No keener contest than the present year's one will take place for the Mayoralty. Botn sides acknowledge that the voting will be very close. Neither side is confident. It is said by some that the probabilities show Cr. Malaghan will have a slight command of votes, because of previous promises when he retired on former occasions. A meeting is called for to-morrow evening, when no doubt each candidate will boi pretty severely catechised. ( We regret to state that Mrßeetham has been confined to his bed during the past four days, suffering from a serious attack of rheumatism. He has consequently been unable to hold the usual Court at Arrowtown. Dr Douglas informs us that the attack is a severe one. After the Ist of July, single letters in all towns in Victoria were to be charged Id, newspapers were to be sent for 4d, and the postal cards were to be transmitted for Id to any part of the colony; packets under an ounce, half-penny.
