©rtginal f oetrn. MISHAPS OF A VOLUNTEER. T AST evening, after drill, I strolled along the terrace side, " And viewed the geese nieanderin' upon the silver tide; I gazed upon the public works, on every hand displayed, And thought it must be very long since first the Park was mule: I thounrht of those who built the town,—a brave and sturdy band, Who left their homes beyond the wave to ornament this land ; How some came out to dig for gold, and some the ground to till, And here and there one might be found who came against his will. As thoughts like these came coursing through the corners of my brain, A house I neared, so in I steered, —it seemed inclined to rain. Outside that house was hung a lamp; I made a short delay, For I wish to moisten now and then the often thirsty clay— Pure water the crystal lake, no doubt is good for some, But I like it best diluted with a slender sketch of mm. I slowly walked across the bridgo, and up the neighboring hill, When o'er a pebble of some size I got an awkwark spill; I hastened to a house, to view my regimental clothes, When, behold an ancient female did turn up her nose, And said—although I blarneyed her with sundry coaxing ( leers—- ' I can't abear no sogers, though they calls 'em volunteers." I spoke unto this female, and began to tell her all The evils thr>t in time of war the tender sex befall—- " If savage Turks and Prussians should one day this land invade, The volunteers will be your friends—depend upon their aid; But let me walk inside, for there I'll talk more at my aise.'* She rudely shut the door and said, " Keep out sir, if you plaze." I waited then to hear no more, but hurried home to bed, And hoped that widow, for she's one, might never more be wed; But next timy I pass that way I'll take a tailor's shears, •lo revenge upon her big chignon, the slighted volunteers.
